Albert Einstein
Albert Einstein
Princeton, NJ, 1950
“My dear Dr. Sternberger: The portraits you have made of me are true masterpieces of the photographic art. It seems quite amazing to me that you could present this subject so appetizingly,” Einstein wrote to Sternberger following this portrait sitting. Sternberger had been surprised when the famous scientist showed up in a crumpled shirt and worn suspenders. “I said to him, ‘My dear professor, will you kindly remove your suspenders at least?’ He said: ‘My goodness! I’m going to lose my trousers! I can’t! But, you see, if you prefer, I would put on a sweatshirt.’” This casual item of clothing for a formal portrait in 1950 captures Einstein’s unpretentious side, often hidden by his towering intellect.
All photographs are limited edition gelatin silver, numbered on the verso, and sealed with a stamp of authenticity. Photographs are sold unframed and printed from the original negative 2017 to the present.
