Princeton, NJ, 1956

When first meeting modern science’s greatest mind, Ilse Sternberger was nervous. “What does one talk about with a man like him?” Her husband assured her, “[Y]ou’ll find out that he isn’t forbidding at all.” This portrait was taken several years later, in 1956, when they were already acquainted. The Sternbergers and Einstein shared a history of displacement from their homelands due to Nazism, bonding over their experiences. This relaxed, happy behind-the-scenes shot from the portrait sitting at his home in Princeton, NJ, reflects their easy acquaintance.

All photographs are limited edition gelatin silver, numbered on the verso, and sealed with a stamp of authenticity. Photographs are sold unframed and printed from the original negative 2017 to the present.
