Sigmund Freud
Sigmund Freud
Captured by Marcel Sternberger, this striking portrait marks one of Freud’s final documented images, immortalizing the founding father of modern psychology. Facilitated by the novelist Stefan Zweig, a close friend to both, this sitting was arranged with a sense of urgency, mindful of Freud’s advancing jaw cancer. Reflecting on the session, Sternberger wrote: “When I returned with the proofs barely a week later, Freud’s illness had visibly progressed. Yet, his eyes remained as alert as ever, despite his hollower cheeks and slightly drawn mouth.” This poignant portrait of Freud encapsulates Sternberger’s unique approach to psychological photography, making it a fitting finale to Freud’s legacy.
